Notes
American naval commanders Commodore John Paul Jones (1747-1792) and Commodore Bainbridge (1774-1833) both feature in print form on several Gray’s designs, usually with some lustre decoration, popular with Gray’s North American customers.
The naval theme of these designs fits well within a wide range of nautical subjects which Gray’s Pottery produced throughout the life of the company.
The two prints on A9316 Bonhomme Richard and the Serapis / Commodore John Paul Jones are comparable with two others on pattern A9287 Constitution and the Java / Commodore Bainbridge, produced for jugs for the Patriotic Products Association (see the Retailers section).
