Sadly, this plate exhibits a characteristic of Gray’s early lustre designs: corrosion/fading of the lustre pigment. The accompanying information from Gray’s Pottery, probably from the 1950s, advises customers of potential problems in this regard.
A careful look at patterns 4109 and 4158 will show the dark colours of the ‘flower’ centres in the motifs of these patterns (see pattern 4040 for what is probably the first of this type): the worn plate shown here for 4193 exhibits the centres of the floral motifs, in dark orange/red, while all the rest around them has worn away.
