Notes

This pattern is one of several decorative lustre designs of the period where the entire decoration is covered in a translucent mother-of-pearl glaze giving an overall iridescent effect.

Pots of this pattern have been recorded with the personal marks of Roland Heath and Hilda May Lockett, being two of the most accomplished decorators at Gray’s Pottery As examples, their skill is shown in the first two images of the same shape vase: the upper vase is decorated by Lockett, the lower by Heath.

Manchester City Museum & Art Gallery purchased the covered ginger jar shown here plus the tall vase shown for pattern 5173 at a Capes Dunn sale on 20th March 1979 for a total sum of £46.

The charger shown in the sixth image features a ‘special finish’ to the back: it has orange lustre bands and lines (a section of the back is shown). This finish, difficult to appreciate when the plate is hung on a wall or when flat on a table, has been recorded on a number of lustre designs that were used for chargers/large plates.

The magazine image is from The Pottery Gazette and Glass Trade Review, 1 September 1927, and it appears to show examples of patterns 4723 and 5155 on sale at Waring & Gillow’s store in Oxford Street, London. (See the tea and dinner ware and the tall vase on the table in the bottom left-hand corner).
