An analysis of surviving examples of this design suggests that it was purely for use on large plates (typically 320mm/12½” or 365mm/14½” diameter).
The design also features a ‘special finish’ to the back of the plate with orange lustre bands and lines (see images). This finish, difficult to appreciate when the plate is hung on a wall or when flat on a table, has been recorded on a number of lustre designs that were used for plates.
