Notes

Many examples of small circular lidded boxes, possibly powder or trinket boxes, have been recorded in the lustre pattern series 4400, 4500, 5000, 5400 and 7000: numbers used in the period 1924-26. The common feature is the base is always a plain lustre, often orange but less frequently, blue, yellow or green. The lids of these boxes are elaborate, multi-coloured lustre designs, often of stylised fruit and flowers.
The second common feature is that the pattern number is only marked on the inside of the lid, rather than on the base: usually, this has only the Gray’s backstamp, invariably the Gloria Lustre mark E1. One possible conclusion is that a stock of ‘pre-prepared’ bases could be held ready for whatever lid was required for a particular order. See pattern 4506 for an image of an example of the practice.
