The style of the pattern number on this vase is a typical example of the difficulty of reading/interpreting these hand-painted numbers: the first character is a ‘7’, not a ‘4’ as might be thought – the last number is definitely a ‘4’ (see Illustration 4 of the Patterns introduction section for more examples). The third character may or may not be a ‘3’.

The design has leaf shapes characteristic of a small number of lustre patterns of the period, as well as an area of matt ‘eggshell’ (green) groundlay. The footring is painted, a common feature of many lustre patterns. The paintress’ signature may be that of Alice Hancock.
