Quadrupeds | Nursery | Susie Cooper | 1928 |
Notes
The various quadrupeds (4-footed animals) shown in recorded examples of pattern 7742 are, to some extent, stylised and so some of them cannot be identified with certainty. Those which are certain are: bear, boar, (horned) cow, goat, horse, pig and sheep. Others, less certain, are: antelope, gazelle and ibex.
Pattern A5029, which also features quadrupeds, has been recorded with a giraffe.
Several of Gray’s nursery patterns provided the opportunity to be supplied bespoke by adding an individual’s name on them, as shown by the mug with JOHN on it.
The Heal’s catalogue page (last image) shows that this pattern was in supply well into the mid-1930s and, therefore, long after Susie Cooper had left Gray’s Pottery to start her own business. Most of the pots recorded for pattern 7742 have the Nursery Ware/Susie Cooper/Quadrupeds backstamp in some form or another (see Backstamps section, backstamp D4, 1928) but several pots with Clipper backstamps (N2 and N7) have been recorded, supporting the view that 7742 continued in production for quite a number of years.
