Notes

A note on a small factory advertising image says: A modern interpretation of the “Crocus” in shades of Amber, Yellow and Coral, on a Yellow Glazed Body. The couvere border in shaded Green with Black Rims.
Note that pattern 8982 is the only pattern recorded consistently with the name Crocus printed on the pots.

Recorded pots indicate that Gray’s used two sizes of hexagonal lidded box as shown in the seventh image: both approximately 115mm/4½” across flats and either 110mm/4¼” or 145mm/5¾” high. An example of the taller version is likely to be the one shown in a 1934 Heal’s catalogue – see pattern 8554 for the illustration. Heal’s identifies the pot as a biscuit jar.

The bottom image appears on page 569 of The Studio magazine, August 1929, as part of an article entitled ‘Modern Tendencies in the Staffordshire Potteries’. The text accompanying the illustration includes: “a gaiety of colour being one of the most pleasing features they (modern wares) possess ….”

Pattern 8391 has blue edging, this one has green.
