Notes

Pattern 8554 (silver), 5156 (multicolour – with a mother-of-pearl glaze).

The 270mm (10½”) diameter plate has the letters B.I.F. alongside the pattern number, indicating a piece which was considered for display at a British Industries Fair (and may or may not have been).

Many recorded 8554 pots (such as the lidded box, 6th image) carry the personal mark of Hilda (May) Lockett, one of Gray’s most accomplished paintresses.

The basic bird design here is that seen in the 1925 patterns 5101 and 5156, created at a time when it is understood that Gordon Forsyth was working with AE Gray. All the examples of these two designs, so far recorded, carry Gloria Lustre backstamps. Out of dozens of examples of 8554 recorded, a wide range of backstamps exists but only one pot has been found with a Liner mark – and it’s D5 (ie without any reference to Susie Cooper). It therefore seems problematical to attribute this design to Miss Cooper.
