Based on a chronological sequence, pattern 8555 is expected to have been created in 1930. However, all the pots so far recorded for this design have backstamps post-1933: N2 and R3 (from 1933), N5 (from 1945). No plausible explanation has been made for this.
Several pots carry the personal mark of Hilda (May) Lockett, one of Gray’s most accomplished paintresses.
Manchester City Museum & Art Gallery has a 310mm diameter bowl of this pattern in its collection: its 1938 accession record (1938.495) indicates a price of £1 13s (£1.65).
