Notes
The jug in the first image (apologies for the poor quality of the image) is the only one recorded with pattern number 9239 marked. It is one of fifteen similar 190mm/7½” high jugs having the following prints: CONSTITUTION 1797 AND THE “JAVA” (front print); COMMODORE BAINBRIDGE (rear print).
Twelve of the jugs have the Patriotic Products Association backstamp (see the Retailers section), accompanied by a limited edition number: the numbers so far recorded range from 236 to 543;
two jugs have the Fondeville Clipper backstamp;
the remaining jug (the one in the first image) has backstamp R1 (in use from 1931-33) but, unusually, without the words ‘HAND-PAINTED’.
It seems likely that this product was conceived at the end of the 1920s.
