Notes

If the amount of A9010 pots seen at auction and on auction sites is anything to go by, this must have been an extremely popular pattern both in the UK and, more especially, in the USA.
It has been recorded on a wide range of useful and decorative ware such as plates of various shapes and sizes, coffee ware, tankards, mugs, jugs, tennis/television sets, puzzle jugs (first image), tobacco jars/humidors and Tom & Jerry punch sets (popular in the USA).

This pattern uses a wide range of Heath prints (see the Prints & Verses, Henry Heath section) and various verses (see the Prints & Verses, Verses section). As with other patterns combining a Heath print and a verse, there is a great mixture of the two.

Four examples of the puzzle jug shown in the first image have been recorded, all in the UK. They all have Verse 11V on the reverse but the ‘front’ Heath images are all different, being Scenes in London No 37, No 39, No 42 and No 43.

Many of the tobacco jars recorded carry the Dunhill retailer’s mark but in its simplest form and with no reference to PARIS FABR.ANGLAISE, common on other tobacco jar patterns such as A8834.

The Tom & Jerry bowl (sixth image) looks to have been a presentation piece with the date 1952 and the letters EB and MAB added around the central verse print.

The seventh image is of a ‘TV or snack set’: a cup on a rectangular plate with a small well, on which to place sandwiches or cakes. This pottery combination has its origins in the ‘tennis sets’ of the early 20th century.

The last image is of a company advertisement which appeared regularly, every four months, in Pottery Gazette and Glass Trade Review from June 1952 to June 1956 (see the Adverts section).

A pattern sold by the London & Paris retailer Dunhill.

Patterns A8829, A8834 and A9010 probably rank as three of Gray’s most popular post-war designs.
