Notes

The variety of pots shown here demonstrates the skill of the pattern designer to ‘fit’ a particular design onto various shapes; in the extreme, from an egg-cup to a casserole.

If the amount of A2112 pots seen at auction and on auction sites is anything to go by, this must have been an extremely popular pattern. It has been recorded on a wide range of both useful and ornamental ware such as coffee sets, jugs of many types, plates, bowls, trays, preserve pots, condiment pots, biscuit barrels, sugar/flour shakers, candlesticks, bulb pots, vases and lamp bases.

This is one of several designs, mostly floral in theme, which incorporate a female’s name somewhere within the decoration. The following names have been recorded for A2112: Ann, Dora (on the sugar/flour shaker and one of the candlesticks), Hilda (on the vase), Jean, Mae (on the Paris jug, the lamp base and both the chargers in the second image) and Rene. The pair of chargers, 335mm/13¼” and 310mm/12¼” diameter respectively, both have the signature Mae on the front and illustrate the variations inherent in freehand painting. See the ‘Designers’, ‘Paintress Designers’ section of the website for more details.

The triangular pot shown in one of the images was probably designed for use as a bulb bowl. None of the examples of this shape so far recorded has an ‘understamp’, ie the mark of the maker of the undecorated pot, but they do carry an impressed number – 669 – likely to be the maker’s shape reference.
Triangular pots have been recorded for a range of patterns spanning the period 1928 to 1936: examples include patterns 8112, 8127, 9413, A1546, A2112, A2999 and A3573.
A new triangular shape with a ‘stepped’ base was introduced around 1937: this was probably made by Kirkland as part of a range of flower and bulb holders. See pattern A4500 for an example of Bulb Bowl No7.
