Notes
The Pottery and Glass Record, December 1933, page 335:
“A very attractive autumn leaves decoration is A.842, this having a ground fading from yellow to grey.”
If the amount of A842 pots seen at auction and on auction sites is anything to go by, this must have been a very popular pattern. It has been recorded on a wide range of useful ware such as cups & saucers, beakers, plates, dishes, jugs, bowls, sandwich sets and preserve pots.
A large number of Paris jugs (as in the first image) has been recorded for this pattern, ranging in height from 75mm/3” to 150mm/6”.
This is one of several designs, mostly floral in theme, which incorporate a female’s name somewhere within the decoration. The following names have been recorded for A842: Dorothy and Nita. See the ‘Designers’, ‘Paintress Designers’ section of the website for more details.
The small ‘jug’ in the fifth image is probably the base of a lemon squeezer (see pattern A822 for a complete example).
The purpose of the two-pocket item (which has no pattern number marked) in the lowest image is unknown.
