Pattern No: A8496

Pattern Name Design Type Designer Likely Design Date
Not known Lustre - copper SC Talbot 1947

Patterns A8481, A8493, A8496, A8497 and A8503 all appear to be lustre designs solely on decorative stoneware shapes; all vases except for a lamp base and a ‘small basket’ (as seen here). The shapes may have been supplied by Pearson of Chesterfield.
Interestingly, during a period when Gray’s Pottery was exporting a great deal of its lustre production to North America, none of the examples of these five patterns has been recorded in an export market.

This pattern appeared in Pottery and Glass in January 1948 in a feature called Quality Corner and was seen in the company’s advertisements in Pottery Gazette in August and December 1947 (see the Adverts section). It also featured in the Studio Year Book – Decorative Art, 1943-48.

The vase in the last image has a price marked in pencil on its base: 25/6 (£1.27½p in British decimal currency). The average weekly wage at the time was around £7.
