Notes

This is one of Gray’s typical intricate lustre resist patterns.
As with a number of Gray’s silver lustre designs, there is an equivalent in copper/bronze lustre: A9123.
Both A9123 and A9252 appear to have been produced in various items of useful ware – coffee sets, jugs and plates, but in the case of A9252 it seems to have been very popular for commemorative items and many inscribed examples of bowls, boxes, plates and in particular, mugs, have been recorded, some of which are shown here.

The inscription on the commemorative bowl in the first image reads: Presented to H Sands esq by the North Staffs Branch Commercial Travellers Association in recognition of serving 21 years on the Executive Council and the inscription around the base of the tankard reads: Neville Wilson Sawyers 1956; on its underside is: 20th September 1956.

The large bowl in the second image was a gift to Ambrose Heal on his 80th birthday: the inscription within is AH 1872-1952.

The base of the tankard in the fourth image has the printed word BAPTIZED and the hand-written date 10TH JAN 1954.

A 16-piece coffee set of this pattern is recorded on a 1955 invoice at a price of £4 15s 10d (£4.79). The sixth image shows such a set – the coffee pot lid is one of the 16 pieces in the description of the time.

The seventh image is of a ‘single-rest’ ashtray. A ‘double-rest’ version was also made (see pattern A4238 for an example) and these shapes originated in the mid-to-late 1930s.

The advertisement, published regularly in Pottery and Glass magazine from 1952-58, appears to show this basic design (see the Adverts section, 1952-58).
