Notes
Many examples of this pattern have been recorded and they have a range of backstamps, both Gray’s Pottery and Old Castle, a backstamp used for the North American market by Gray’s Pottery (but not exclusively – other potters also used it). The pots shown illustrate this variety of marks.
Frequently, these examples of A5981 have been of pots in the USA, a reflection of the vast amount of lustre ware which Gray’s Pottery exported to North America during the Second World War and on into the 1950s. The Antique-shaped jug (third image) seems to have been especially popular, as was the Castle jug (first, second and last images) – see the website section Retailers, North America – USA, Skinners for more information on Castle jugs.
